Russia’s Putin Promises Retaliation After Deadly Drone Attack in Occupied Luhansk

MB DAILY NEWS | Raleigh, NC.

Russian President Vladimir Putin promised retaliation after accusing Ukraine of launching a deadly drone attack in the occupied city of Starobilsk, located in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk region.

Russian officials said six people died and 39 others suffered injuries during the overnight strike. Authorities also reported that 15 people were still missing as rescue workers searched through the damaged building.

The attack reportedly targeted a student residence, according to Russian officials.

Putin denies military activity near the building

Speaking from the Kremlin on Friday, Putin rejected claims that military operations were linked to the building.

“There were no military facilities or intelligence services near the area,” Putin said during a public reception in Moscow.

He also stated that the strike involved 16 drones launched in three separate waves.

Putin instructed Russian military leaders to prepare proposals for possible retaliatory actions against Ukraine.

Ukraine says it targeted a Russian drone unit

The Ukrainian military confirmed a strike in Starobilsk. However, Ukrainian officials said the intended target was the headquarters of Russia’s Rubicon drone unit.

Ukraine did not confirm whether the military site was located inside the same building identified by Russia as a student residence.

Independent verification of the claims remains difficult because the area is under Russian occupation.

Rescue teams continue searching for survivors

Emergency crews continued rescue operations on Friday as they searched through the rubble left by the explosion.

Russian state television showed images from the scene, including injured students receiving medical treatment.

One injured student was identified as 19-year-old Diana Shovkun.

Photos from the area revealed heavy structural damage to the building and nearby infrastructure.

Drone warfare increases tensions in the conflict

Drone attacks have become more common during the Russia-Ukraine war. Both sides continue using unmanned aerial systems to target military positions and strategic facilities.

Putin’s warning of retaliation has raised concerns about a possible escalation in the conflict.

The war continues to cause civilian casualties and widespread destruction across several regions of Ukraine.
